2009 Annual Show

20th and 21st of November

Orkney Auction Mart hosted the 68th annual cage bird show on the 20th and 21st November 2009. Once again, the event was hailed as a great success and attracted seven new junior members to the society. This bodes very well for the future success of the club.

View's from both ends of show venue

A very respectable 710 entries ensured a successful show. These entries consisted of 184 canaries and british birds, 110 racing pigeons, 91 fancy pigeons, 68 budgies, 11 foreign birds, 235 poultry, 8 rabbits and 4 cavies.

This year the judges travelled from as far as Alness. The senior judge was the clubs honorary president, Harold Linklater, who did a fantastic job at the age of 87. He said "that the show was the best organised show he had ever been at and that he was honoured to have been asked to judge the budgies." Donald Bruce from Caithness, another senior citizen, judged the fancy pigeons and foreign birds. This was his first visit since the show relocated to the mart.

The organisers repeated last year's buffet at the West End Hotel and again it was well attended which gave everyone the chance to socialise and talk to the judges.

Mike Thomson with Supreme Champion "Charlie" the plumhead parakeet

The supreme champion, this year, came from the foreign bird section. This time, the bird was a plumhead parakeet, shown by a first time exhibitor, from Castletown Caithness, Mike Thomson, who also took the best canary in show with a border canary. He was absolutely over the moon and said "he would come back next year," John Bain, from Wick, a regular exhibitor, won the best unflighted border bred by the exhibitor. Bryce Wylie had success with a homebred fife fancy. Best british bird was a greenfinch from Graham Beck. The budgie entry was up this year and it was great to see the awards spread around, with Bryan Taylor taking the best budgie, with a cobalt blue bird. It was nice to see Ian Sutherland back exhibiting and winning two breeder cups. The racing pigeon honours went to Herbert MacKenzie. The fancy pigeon honours went to Jim Wilson, with a modena. Denise Ritch to best pigeon any variety with a show racer, which went on to take the supreme champion (local). The poultry section was again won by Eddie Craigie, a Cage Bird Society stalwart, who won overall poultry champion with a white wyandotte hen, also taking best bird shown by ex-serviceman. On Saturday, the rabbits and cavies joined the exhibitors it was disappointing to see the entry down again this year at 12, but this did not detract from the winner, Melissa Cormack who won both best rabbit and best cavy
